Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
