Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found multiple other marked vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state early analysis suggest the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
An important political figure stated the incident rendered him without words and required to be solved promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on online, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
